Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow also known as lateral epicondylitis is probably the most common complaint in the elbow. It is caused not only by inflammation of the tendons on the outside of the elbow but also it is thought there is a slight degenerative process in the area as well. It is usually cased through overuse or incorrect gripping use of the hand

SYMPTOMS
Pain usually gradual in onset on the outside of the elbow
Pain on gripping or lifting objects
Pain on extending the wrist backwards
Pain radiating down the forearm

Treatment
When treating tennis elbow it is important to establish the root cause of the problem, so a full assessment is done not only of the elbow and upper limb but of the neck also. Active physiotherapy will treat the acute inflammation with any number of tools, ice ,electrotherapy, acupuncture, anti inflammatories may also be required, Once the acute nature of the symptoms have subsided then a programme of exercises which are specific for the degenerative nature that is associated with this problem, These exercises are designed to improve blood supply to the area. Acupuncture can continue during this phase if desired.
