Golfers Elbow also known as medial epicondylitis causes pain and discomfort on the inside of the elbow. It is similar to its counterpart , tennis elbow, the main difference between the two conditions is the location of pain and the activity that causes the injury.
It too is caused by overuse but of a different set of muscles than tennis elbow, golfers elbow is caused by an overuse or poor use of the muscle that flex the wrist.
SYMPTOMS
Pain on the inside of the elbow
Shooting type pain on certain gripping activities
Pain on wrist flexion
Pain on resisted rotation (pronation) of the forearm
TREATMENT
Active Physiotherapy can offer ice , electrotherapy and/or acupuncture in the early phase of Golfers Elbow, when inflammation is the main problem. Rest is advised but if it’s not possible to rest completely then a compression strap (elbow support) may be recommended. This takes stress of the affected tendons, whilst allowing the user to continue with activities.
Once the acute inflammation has eased we can then offer a progressive strengthening programme, this is important to ensure lasting results
