
Frozen shoulder, capsulitis or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes restriction of motion in the shoulder joint and is often associated with some degree of pain. It occurs when a structure that surrounds the joint called the capsule becomes tight and contracted
Most often, frozen shoulder occurs for no apparent reason and comes on spontaneously, however a smaller number of people will develop a frozen shoulder after a trauma to the area. Frozen shoulder usually occur in people between 40 to 60 years old and is a bit more prevalent in women
SYMPTOMS
Shoulder pain; usually a dull, aching pain
Limited movement of the shoulder
Difficulty with activities such as brushing hair, putting on shirts/bras
Pain when trying to sleep on the affected shoulder
TREATMENT
During the early stages of Frozen Shoulder pain can be the main symptom. Physiotherapy can use TENS and or Acupuncture to alleviate symptoms. Usually you may be referred to a specialist for their opinion at this point. In the mid stage the main symptoms is stiffness . At the end stage of frozen shoulder when movement is recovering physiotherapy intervention is important to facilitate normal movement and start a strengthening programme not just to build strength but for stability also, this is key to recovery.
