
Patella maltracking
The kneecap (patella) sits ontop of the thigh bone (femur) this is called patellofemoral joint. If this position of the kneecap is altered in any way due to muscle weakness, muscle tightness or altered biomechanics or indeed a combination of these then you will experience pain at the front of the knee. Because there are so many problems or combinations of problems that contribute to this pain, there are many words to describe it (Anterior Knee Pain, Patellofemoral Pain, Chondromalacia Patella, Patella Maltracking).
POSSIBLE CAUSES
This pain can be caused as a result of any one or any combination of the following
Altered alignment of the feet (flat footed),
Altered alignment at the patellofemoral joint itself,
Muscle weakness (thigh muscle and/or the buttock muscle)
Muscle Tightness (calf muscles or the hamstrings or the outside of the leg)
Being overweight
SYPMTOMS
Pain around the knee area going up and down stairs or hills
Pain on running
Dull ache with prolonged sitting
TREATMENT
Because there can be many different reasons why you can experience knee pain a really good examination of your symptoms is key to getting the correct diagnosis. Once the reason or number of reasons for your pain is identified these areas can be addressed. We will always recommend some form of strengthening exercises to the structures that are identified as being weak. We can pinpoint any structures that are too tight and issue with the appropriate stretches. Any biomechanical issues can be addressed with orthotics these are inserted into you footwear. Healing can also be enhanced by using electrotherapy acupuncture or laser.
